The Easter weekend is traditionally a busy time in the garden and so it is for us. We continue to clear the over-wintered leafy greens as they come to the end of their productive life, and replace them with lots of different new varieties. However, the over-wintered spring onions are just reaching their best now and we look forward to picking those for several weeks.
Two less usual herbs are ready to pick now. The mild aniseed flavour of lovage is good in salads, fish and chicken dishes, and you can use lemon balm in the same way. You can also use a few of the lemony leaves to make a relaxing tea. If you would like to try either or both, let me know. If you have any favourite uses for lovage or lemon balm, I can spread the word.
We also have British apples, pears, mushrooms, leeks, red cabbages, white onions, carrots, potatoes and beetroot. The potatoes are Ambo from west Cumbria.
From our own tunnels: we are picking spring onions, lovage, lemon balm, rocket, flat leaf parsley, rhubarb, Swiss chard, rainbow chard, chives, chervil, miner’s lettuce, kale and a variety of Oriental leaves. Also, our own over-wintered lettuce is now big enough for spring salad packs although the spring planted varieties are still a bit on the small side.
We have managed to avoid a general price rise for two years but ever-increasing costs mean we now have to add a bit to our box prices. You may remember we recently increased the price of Small and Medium Mediterranean boxes to £13.50 and £19 respectively – these stay the same. All the other boxes will increase in price by 50p from the first week in May 2017.
BONUS CHERVIL: A small bag of fresh leaves for 50p.
BONUS MINER’S LETTUCE: 75p per bag.
GENERAL BONUS BAG: Choose any item we supply (fruit or veg) and as long as supplies allow, we’ll bring you a bag of it weighing more than you would normally get for the price. £2 a bag. As long as we have the produce, you can have as many General Bonus Bags as you like.
