A bit more exotic than rhubarb, kumquats from Spain are another early sign of spring. They might look like tiny oranges but you can eat them whole including the skin and seeds. The tangy citrus centre is surrounded by a surprisingly sweet skin. Try a handful for £1.50. Kumquats, with or without the addition of lemons, also make a nice marmalade ingredient.
Our own new season rhubarb is ready now. If you would like us to include some in your box, let me know. The first stirrings of spring are also encouraging the over-wintered Oriental leaves to bolt and flower which brings a short spell of additional deliciousness. While the tops look like tiny broccoli stalks they can be used to provide a particularly nutritious boost to your leafy greens – look out for those in packs of winter salad and Oriental leaves.
There is just time to make marmalade with superb organic oranges from Ave Maria farm in Seville: £3 per kg. We have a few left so order now!
We also have British mushrooms, leeks, celeriac, red, white and green cabbages, red and white onions, carrots, potatoes, beetroot and butternut squash. The potatoes are Ambo from west Cumbria. Purple sprouting broccoli should be available soon.
And there is still some harvesting to be done in our polytunnels. We are picking pak choi, chervil, miner’s lettuce, cavolo nero and a variety of Oriental leaves. The juicing apples are finished for this season.
