The apple season has started as it always does with Discovery. We have seven other varieties at Houghton that will be ripe for the picking later on – although some are in short supply because of the same late frost that damaged the tomatoes and French beans.
We still have basil – regular Genovese and small-leafed Greek and you get two bags of either (or one of each) for £2. As well as our regular cherry tomato variety called Sakura, we have a yellow mini plum type called Miele, a regular size red one called Douglas, an orange one called Orange Santa and two peculiar ones: Indigo Blue, which has small purple and brown fruit, and Mirabelle Blanche which is a pale yellow colour – sometimes described as ivory.
We still have lemon balm and lovage, each for 50p a bunch and there are still lots of cucumbers. Bonus Cucumbers now four for £1. We are also picking kale, cavolo nero, Oriental leaves, pointed green cabbages, red cabbages, shallots, courgettes, Greek basil, regular basil, chives, runner beans, French beans, flowery salad packs, chard and perpetual spinach. And we still have Silverskin pickling onions (500g for £2) and gherkins (500g for £2).
